Genearlly nuns would enter to convent before puberty while boys would enter the monastary after. You are right that they were not orphanages and did not take young children, thou what orphanages there were, were run by the Church. Abandoing newborns to a orphanage was not possible. Babies can't survive on cow's milk, especially the unpastuzed kind.

AFAIK, babies can survive on goat milk (barely). I think I read that this was used in the past when the mother died and there was no wet nurse available.

Wet nurses were also an option. Presumably not from the monastery, but from a nearby village.

Australia was burnt into a desert. Europe was deforested and the whales were nearly made extinct. 30-70 million Buffalo were slaughtered, largely by Native American's who had worshiped them for thousands of years and were suddenly all to happy, to wipe them out for trade with the white man. A few of our many historic sins without mentioning any of the ongoing ones. Humanity is hopeless!

We're not gonna make it, are we? People, I mean.

It's in your nature to destroy yourselves.

I often wonder if whatever it is we currently experience as consciousness or self-awareness was a major contributor to species-wide problems such as climate change.

Having come across Zapffe's "existential elk" theory in the last year, it's hard to not see consciousness as a design flaw rather than an upgrade that sits at the root of the things driving climate change, e.g. hyperconsumerism, rampant use of non-renewable materials, and all the other things we choose into for personal satisfaction despite the negative impacts to the whole.

Might we have been better off without consciousness, or at least not as detrimental to the planet? I don't know.

Perhaps we survive, perhaps we don't. Frankly I don't believe it matters. We are no more intelligent then heard's of lemmings eating themselves into famine.

It was not the Natives who nearly exterminated the American bison.

"The findings challenge the idea that violence can be understood as a simple evolutionary inheritance." Since when does evolutionary inheritance, imply simple! Even highly territorial bears, will sometimes choose to ignore the other guy a few feet away catching salmon.

In NYC that would be the street. The great conundrum of ev's. People that have access to home-charging, worry about range. The one's that mostly sit idling in traffic, don't have access to charging.

> In NYC that would be the street. The great conundrum of ev's. Most streets have street lighting and electricity, easy to add chargers to lamp posts. NYC probably hasn't heard of street lighting yet?

> The one's that mostly sit idling in traffic, don't have access to charging. I think it would be an impressive feat of engineering to charge cars while they are on the move. I like how you think, cars are mostly idling in traffic, we can consider them as stationary, and charge cars while they idle!

Parking is not assigned, sometimes you got to drive around for 20 minutes to find a spot to park over-night and its not guaranteed to be next to a street light. By idling in traffic, I meant that we would love ev's since most of the time we are just wasting gas and fuming up our own neighborhoods.

The ‘burbs truly are the worst of all worlds.

Some of the homes in my neighbourhood have 2 cars in the driveway and another two on the street.

They all move regularly. Walkability is terrible. Public transit is iffy. People have to get places on time.

Zoning changes: can't park inside, in front of the house, and on the street. This will address the problems you raised. Unlikely it will be passed.

Change these rules in hopes there are less cars? Or what?

Where will people put all the cars? The driveways holds 2, and really that’s only if you choose them wisely.

It is already illegal to park your car on the street for an extended period of time. Nobody cares.

Limit the number of vehicles owned by each address?

Fix public transit? Pipe dream. We’ve invested millions and it’s even worse.

The stores and plazas are already built, so walkability is unlikely to improve.

WFH? Actively being abolished.

We really suck at this civil planning thing, don’t we?

In London, I saw lampposts with EV chargers built in, as well as tastefully concealed sidewalk ports. This is not an intractable problem.

How "productivity" is measured needs to be reworked in the age of AI. By the old measures productivity should be through the roof. yet by the most objective measure of the desired outcome of productivity, profit doesn't seem to be budging.

Its been great for those that can afford to live in Manhattan. For us living in the other borrows its been horrible. The honking is now non-stop.

I'm in Brooklyn, I'm not sure what you mean? How would it affect the outer boroughs?

Here across the 59th, traffic is definitely worst. With the BQE the daily shit-show that is is (never ceases to amaze me, how people get in accidents on a highway that rarely get over 35mph.) The best way was actually thru the FDR. Now everyone just uses Vernon Blvd which is only accessible thru local streets.

Perhaps you should take a look at their financial statements before making assumptions. Tech spending is ~50%, another ~30% is for volunteer support.

Perhaps you should re-read what I wrote for comprehension. 50% of their spending may be on tech, but their total spending is only 4% of their income. Apparently I'm more familiar with their financial statements than you.

In Shinto religion the emperor is viewed as direct descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu. During the rule of the Shogunate, the Emperor was simply a figurehead, a role he was relegated to again after WW2.

If you are curious to know you could test that out. Something like, can you believe how hot it is today, I'm so glad I got those solar panels installed, they will save me a ton. The response will be either Oh really, i never noticed. or yeh, but the cost too much. If you are the green type you could could also use that as a sales pitch.

Should the FCC be proposing how Robocaller's continue earning any revenue in its decisions?
