We had our twins sleeping through the night 7pm-7am at 3 months. We followed the techniques in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Healthy-Sleep-Habits-Happy-Child/dp/03...

It was a fantastic book and written by a doctor who specializes in sleep habits. It's the gift I give to all my friends who are expecting.

Just to add another opinion on this book, I found it very badly written. The points he makes are helpful, but it takes a lot of work to find them amidst all the contradictions and convoluted paragraphs.

Also, there are only a few pages on infants and sleeping, and the rest is for older children.

China will use this as a negotiation point to further their agendas. The US has used this tactic before, notably in the Suez Canal crisis to keep Britain and France from attacking Egypt:

http://www.fpri.org/enotes/200709.bracken.financialwarfare.h...

It's not in the best interests of China to cause massive inflation of the US Dollar, but it definitely gives them the ability to put short-term pressure on US politicians.

IANAL, but it looks like he might have a case for prior art, if he published his methods prior to patent being issued.

http://www.ipwatchdog.com/inventing/prior-art/

Still, this puts the burden of proof on the person claiming prior art. I'd like to see a reform of patent law that would make the infringing patent holder responsible for the legal fees for proving the prior art, if it's valid.

That would:

1. Force the potential infringer to do a more rigorous search prior to filing the patent.

2. Gives the person with prior art a little more leverage in negotiations.

Am I misguided?

Does the author live in the US? As far as I know e.g. European patent law does require not only prior art but also prior publication.

Who is going to publish something that they consider obvious?

An example: Page numbers are considered obvious nowadays, but they are still in a lot of published works.

Can you name a recent published work wherein the subject is page numbering?

Does this matter?

Any book will serve as published prior art against a patent on page numbering. It does not have to be the main subject.

My point is that there are many small problems which we solve as engineers every day that are too trivial to publish in a paper.

It is all well and good until some moron (genius?) comes along and patents these simple ideas.

Just push your source out in the open. Then you will have published every small idea that's in your code.

Publishing your stuff in an academic paper is not necessary for these purposes.

Only if you are recording audio as well. The wiretapping law applies to secretly recording audio, not video.

Edit: A good read, from the RCFP... http://www.rcfp.org/taping/

It's not very secret if you're holding up a cell phone.

And if that is decidedly secret, then nobody should care as long as the unlawful audio is removed before distribution.

I use the term unlawful audio because only the personally identifying information should need to be censored/removed.

I used "secret", probably shouldn't have.

The article I referenced says that it varies by state, especially with regards to consent. Some states are single-party, some states require all party consent.

But if you're on the street in public, you'd think everything is fair game... especially if you're a public servant.

It's nice to see someone taking a stand and clearing it up (in one state at least).

If anyone is interested in building one of these for their toddler, there is a great pattern located here: http://crumleydotorg.chattablogs.com/archives/038834.html

I used the above pattern to build 2 of them for my 2.5 year old twins... they love them and have great balance now.

Here's how mine turned out: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/113513/bikes.jpg http://dl.dropbox.com/u/113513/bike1.jpg http://dl.dropbox.com/u/113513/bike2.jpg

I broke-even in price, it cost approx. $60/bike which is what it costs to get a similar "elmo" bike at target: http://www.target.com/Elmos-Beginner-Bike/dp/B00155X3UI

If you're going to break the bank, it's going to be b/c you couldn't find cheap wheels. This is where I went wrong, since I spent about $11 per wheel at home depot. I later found them for $4 at a smaller local hardware shop. ;p

That's a good job you did there. And so much more satisfaction making your own than just going out and buying one.

What better gift to your child than something made with your own hands and on your own time.

This post reminds me of a certain xkcd comic: http://xkcd.com/538/

The difference being that wrenches purchased by the TSA probably cost $600. ;)

Well, maybe not but it's fun to say: http://www.govexec.com/dailyfed/1298/120798t1.htm

a HN "zen garden" type of redesign would be a fun challenge, limiting yourself to modifying the css only.

http://www.csszengarden.com/

Sadly, the underlying table structure and layout of the site isn't condusive to this. I spent a few days earlier this year trying to write an iPhone interface for HN by just modifying existing styles and it didn't work out so well.

You don't lose your home if the bank goes out of business. Mortgage holdings are sold off as assets as part of the bankruptcy settlement. The ownership of the underlying mortgage changes, not the ownership of the home.

Give them the option of filling in the CC info and provide a "Do it later" button?

It would be interesting to see how the conversation rate differed between the group that filled in the information immediately and those that opted for later.
